Digitale Internationalisierung | Virtual Mobility
In the uncertain and rapidly shifting landscape of the COVID-19 pandemic, initiatives to internationalize digital teaching and learning have become increasingly relevant for all higher education institutions. Key concepts such as digital internationalization, virtual mobility, virtual exchange, internationalization at home, and internationalization of curricula are currently being explored widely and globally.
Consequently, in October 2020 the University Board published a set of recommendations for internationalization in teaching at the FernUniversität. They include integration of at least one internationally-oriented module as an elective in each bachelor’s program, and as a required module in each master’s program, thereby actively encouraging the FernUniversität’s teaching staff to expand their international collaboration activities.

We are happy to announce that with a total of four projects funded through the DAAD's International Virtual Academic Collaboration (IVAC) program, the FernUniversität is the best-represented German higher education institution in the program. The participating faculties include the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (Chair of Instructional Technology and Media and Chair of History and Presence of Pre-Modern Europe), the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science (Chair of Parallelism and VLSI) and the Faculty of Law.
The FernUniversität's international digital projects take a variety of approaches to international collaboration, including blended international mobility, collaboration in a virtual lab, and joint creation of educational products. Based on our international/blended teaching projects, the International Office at the FernUniversität in Hagen, in close collaboration with our dedicated teaching staff, has compiled a set of guidelines to provide information and support for teaching staff interested in setting up a joint digital or blended learning unit with international partners and to address some of the most relevant issues for international digital teaching collaborations.
